The Transformation...

In the interest of saving space and download time, I have included small pictures on this page that  link to larger pictures that you can see more clearly.  They will open in a new window.  Just close the window to come back to this page.

BEFORE

AFTER

l2: I actually started working at the school in June of 1998.  Each morning when I arrived, these two dogs were always waiting in front of the school.

l3: One of my first concerns was to move the circulation desk so that my back was not to the door, and then provide some kind of covering and protection for the networking cables.

l4: The library had "rails" on the walls for shelving.  The superintendent, Mr. Chessmore, wanted those rails put to use, so we had to track down all the shelving that was meant for the rails.

l6: There was a sink on this wall that needed to be removed.  There was a lot space being used for miscellaneous "storage" - Copier #1 is in this area - a Riso machine.

l7: A variety of carts were not being used, the large paper rolls were housed here, as well as numerous boxes of uncataloged items.

l8: These kits were repackaged in hanging bags and cataloged, but there isn't anything that can be done about the folding wall - it can be used in the future to divide the room if the library is ever relocated. Copier #2 was on this wall.

l9: The tall black cart housed the video collection, and the nonfiction section started here.

l5:

There was another sink on this wall that needed to be removed to provide more space.  Also, you can see more unused rails for shelving.

l10:
Copier #3! The retrospective conversion is in full swing in this corner.  My biggest concern here was the lack of light.

l11: This is a week after I started.  We have started locating some of the shelving for the rails.  It seemed as though things had to get worse before they could get better.

l12: I found several different parts to computers, but this was one mouse I hope to never find again!

l13: The lime green shelving is being changed to gray for a more calming effect.

l14: You can see that the circulation desk has been moved and now has the dead space of the folding wall behind it.

l15: New lighting has been installed in the previously dark corner as the conversion to automation continues.

l16: Just one more look at the created chaos -- it was getting into the end of June, the weather was heating up, and the air conditioning was not working.  Although it looked hopeless, I had a vision -- it just needed a little more work.
