Title I Schoolwide Plan
A schoolwide plan
should be a comprehensive plan for reforming the total instructional
program in the school that (i) describes how the school will implement
the components of a schoolwide program; (ii) describes how the school
will use resources under this part and from other sources to implement
those components; (iii) includes a list of state educational agency and
local educational agency programs and other federal programs that will
be consolidated in the schoolwide program; and (iv) describes how the
school will provide individual student academic assessment results in a
language the parents can understand, including an interpretation of
those results, to the parents of a child who participated in the
academic assessments required. Plans shall include an abstract, of not more than one page, describing the comprehensive plan.
Abstract
Umonhon
Nation (Omaha Nation) Public School is located in Macy, Nebraska, the
center of Tribal Government for the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Macy, an
unicorporated town of about 1,550 is about 33 miles southeast of Sioux
City, Iowa and about 70 miles northwest of Omaha, near the Missouri
River.
The K-12 school has a student population of approximately 435, 99% of whom are Native American. The majority are Omaha Indian.The school has a faculty of 48, six of whom are Native American. A main building and four outlying buildings are divided into three grade levels: K-5 (elementary), 6-7-8 (middle school) and 9-12 (high school).Omaha Nation is a school-wide Title I school and has Success for All Reading and Math in the elementary school and Expeditionary Learning in the high school as Comprehensive School Reform projects. Both Success for All and Expeditionary Learning required at least a 90% vote by the staff showing support of the programs. Both programs had overwhelming support by the staff when they were adopted.
The Middle School has recently started a multi-level family grouping model with support and guidance from a Middle School Development consultant from the University of Nebraska.
Umonhon Nation Public School also participates in the
Native American High Performance Learning Community. This program
was started at the beginning of the 2001-2002 school year. NAHPLC
is a community/school-based model that has ten key dimensions for
school improvement. Those dimensions include:

· Tribal
· Community, and Family Support and Involvement;
· Maximum Use of Technology
· Literacy and English Language Development;
· Reaching and Maintaining Heritage Language and Indigenous Culture
· High Expectations as Articulated in Goals and Standards
· Aligned Assessment
· Professional Staff Connected to the Community Culture
· School Culture Congruent with Home Culture
The NAHPLC team consists of teachers, administrators,
school board members, tribal council members, community members,
parents, students, and classified staff. Ms. Pat Stone is
an outside consultant for the model, and meets with the team on a
monthly basis.
