Our Schedule

Hey everybody! Kindergarten isn't quite what it used to be. So we thought we'd let you know what we do in school all day. We don't really go by the clock because we never know what direction we may take. So here is a day in the life of Kindergarten...
Bell Ringer As we arrive in our classroom Mrs. Straight has a review activity for us at our desk. This gives her a chance to check out our take-home folders, take attendance, and listen to any important news we may have.
Opening Activities We always start with the Pledge of Allegiance, then it's on to calendar time. We do a lot of Math activities in here, too. Our weather reporter then puts up our weather picture for the day. Mrs. Straight has taught us some poems and songs that we can sing. Then comes our favorite - a morning story. We have to get our bodies and brains ready to work so we always do an energizer.
Morning Message Mrs. Straight has a message for us. She's tricky because not only do we get to hear the message, but also she teaches us about words and sentences. We also learn about capital letters and end marks, too - all in her morning message.
Phonics and Reading This is an important part of our day. We have a new letter each week. We learn the name of the letter, the sound the letter makes and how to make the letter. Mrs. Straight shows us how to blend different letters to read words, sentences and books. We even have books we learn to read out loud. Mrs. Straight also introduces us to "popcorn" words. These are words that pop up a lot when you are reading. Sometimes they are hard because they are words you can't sound out. We call those words - "learn by heart" words.
Predictable Charts Each week we write a class book. Mrs. Straight gives us a topic and a sentence starter to get going. It takes us a week to do one book.
Writer's Workshop To become good readers we also need to become good writers. First we talk and share ideas. Then we write about our ideas in our Writer's Notebooks. Late in the fall we go back to Writer's Notebook to get ideas to write our own stories. Hey - that makes us authors!
Lunch 11:20 - 11:55
Noon Recess 11:55 - 12:15
Math Learning about numbers is just as important as learning about letters. We look for patterns, we learn to count and write our numbers, we learn about shapes, money and measurement. We also begin adding and subtracting sets..
PE
Mr. Nilius is our PE teacher. We have PE everyday from 12:55-1:25 with the first graders. We need to wear our PE shoes everyday.
Theme Time This is our Science and Social Studies time. Mrs. Straight usually prepares two units each month.
Work Jobs These are like centers. We have groups we work in. We have three different work jobs to go to. We learn how to work and play together as a team. It also gives a chance to practice old skills and explore new things.
Rest Time Kindergarten sure is hard work. After our noon recess we get to take a rest. Mrs. Straight also teaches us a little bit about music appreciation as we listen to some classical music while we rest. In January - no more rest time!
Sentence Books When we come back after Christmas vacation it is good-bye rest time - hello sentence books. This is when we practice our beautiful penmanship.
Specials Not all of our time is spent in the classroom or with Mrs. Straight. These are called our specials. We do these once or twice a week. Music - Mondays and Thursdays Art - Tuesdays and Thursdays
Class Counseling - Wednesdays - Mrs. Volwiler comes to our classroom to talk to us about getting along with others. Library - Fridays Show and Tell - Fridays Celebrity Reader - Every once in a while, on a Friday, someone special will come to our classroom and read us a story. The first graders join us. It is always a surprise who shows up at our door!
