Accelerated Reader

books:

Our Accelerated Reading Program (AR) encourages all students to ... read, read, read!

In Kindergarten, students check out an AR book to read when we visit the library. On the spine of the book is a colored sticker that represents the reading level of the book. For example, a book with an orange sticker would be a book at a first grade reading level.

Parents are asked to read the book to their child at least three times. It is also important that the parent ask the child questions about the book to check for understanding. Students will eventually be able to start reading words, sentences, sections, or all of the book as their reading level increases through the year.

After the parent has read the book to the student at least three times, the student brings the book to school on our AR test day(s) to take the test over the book on the computer. It will test their comprehension or understanding of the book.

AR in Kindergarten usually begins after Christmas. A parent volunteer or High School teaching aide will sit with each child at the computer and read the test item to them off the screen. I will send progress reports home at the end of each month. I do NOT keep track of points earned for each book, but I do take a look at the scores of the tests. Our goal is to get students motivated to read and to also get them used to the AR program before they begin first grade.
