Cost of progress
First of all progress is always suspect. And in determining
progress a person subjectively looks at what benefits come to the
individual. First one must answer "what's in it for me?" If
that answer is not satisfied, it's easy to answer, progress is not
worth it. We constantly are in a state of flux. Our
technology changes with the hint of "new" that comes down the
pipe. Sometimes the "progress" is evident right away. I
remember when everything on the internet was text. Then came
Mosaic. Remember, pictures and text through this medium? I
remember my first visit to the Smithsonian. It was great and
right there in front of my face. Now THAT was progress.
But sometimes, we get used to doing something one way and notably we do
that one way GREAT!!! But then progress comes along and it
changes a little or a lot and at that point we question whether this is
progress or is it a step backward.
Such progress is on the way. We recently changed our servers
around to accomodate a new mail system coming very soon. It will
allow for calendaring and sharing those calendars with others. It
will be faster web mail for those of us who use Squirrel or Twig.
It will be recognizably faster and better supported. Please take
your time to decide if it's progress or not. Give it a chance.
The cost of progress sometimes is determined on the amount of work that
remains for us to do. If my mail takes longer, that's a
cost. If I have to change my process in saving letters or an
address book entry, that's a cost. If my mail doesn't go through
and I have to get the assistance of others, that's a cost.
Sometimes you might ask yourself, "is this cost for progress worth
it?" I've got to answer "Yes". Becasue of the cost of
staying the same mutiplies itself over and over for anyone who just
stays behind. If we keep paying the price, the cost will be worth
it!! Hang in there and I'll see you on the net!!
