Diane Woodford, 5th grade educator at Covington Elementary in South Sioux City, was named the Nebraska 2004 Teacher of the Year. Woodford was one of four finalists for the award. The Nebraska Teacher of the Year Award began in 1972. Nominees complete an extensive application, with four finalists chosen for the final phase of the process, an interview. A panel of educators conduct the interview and make the final selection. All finalists, as well as the award winner, will be honored at a Lincoln ceremony on November 6. All finalists will receive an Award of Excellence and a $1,000 grant to use on an education project of their choosing. In addition, Woodford will serve as Nebraska's ambassador for education and compete for National Teacher of the Year honors. The other finalists are from Omaha, Lincoln, and Beatrice. Woodford has been a South Sioux City Community School educator for 28 years. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1971. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has a master's degree from Morningside College. Diane and her husband David live in Sergeant Bluff. They have two sons, Brian and Reed, both majoring in education at the University of Northern Iowa.
Congratulations to Diane and South Sioux City Community Schools! We are proud of you!
