The UNPS Logo

The Umonhon Nation Public School logo was created as part of a contest to design a suitable school logo in 1997 or 1998  by Girard Grant, a student at UNPS.

The logo uses the traditional Native American dreamcatcher as the basis for the design.  According to legend, dreamcatchers are to be hung above a person's sleeping area.  During the night, bad dreams a caught in the web.  The bright morning light destroys those dreams, providing safety and a better life.

school logo with name:

The dream catcher contains lightening bolts, signifying power.  The Inshtsonda (Thunder Clan) is represented in this way.

The two distinct colors within the dreamcatcher signify the earth and the sky.  In the Omaha Tribe, the 10 Clans are divided into Earth People and Sky People.  The brightness of the sky alludes toward a bright and promising future for students who complete their education.

The pencil intersecting the dreamcatcher indicates the emphasis the school places on academic performance.  The paintbrush signifies the importance of the arts as part of a well-rounded educational experience.

The predominant colors of the logo are the school colors of red, white and gold.

Finally, the eagle feather reminds students of the spiritual and historic symbolism of the eagle in the Omaha Tribal culture.  The eagle is a sign of strength and good luck.
