Final Bracket with all scores and placings, January 28, 2007
At the request of fans, this website will again post the scores,
stories and photographs from the Dakota Oyate Challenge Basketball
Tournament held in Huron,
SD from Thursday-Saturday, January 25-26-27, 2007.
This is NOT an official site of the DOC. However, it is provided for
fans to access information about the scores and tournament brackets of
the boys and girls tournaments. An obvious bias toward the
Umonhon Nation Public School Chiefs and Lady Chiefs will be
evident...no apologies are extended! The Chiefs are the reigning
Champions from the 2006 Tournament, and the Lady Chiefs finished third
in the girls bracket.
Thank you to Mr. Robert Begay, DOC Tournament Director, for his assistance and support in this endeavor.
Wednesday, January 24
5:30 PM The Chiefs and Lady Chiefs have arrived in
Huron! The trip was uneventful and very comfortable in the coach
cruiser the school purchased this year. Team headquarters is at
the Comfort Inn
(formerly the Holiday Inn). It is comfortable and the staff has
been wonderful. Wireless internet is functioning, so fans can
expect updates from the tournament daily. Teams will practice at 7:30
PM tonight in the Arena.
Thursday, January 25
The Chiefs and Lady Chiefs each won their opening round games, the
girls taking an easy 60-29 victory over Crazy Horse after a bit of a
slow start, and the boys winning a see-saw battle with Takini 61-60
when the Chiefs held off a late rally by Takini and a last-second
in-bounds play by their opponent.
The girls and boys will have matchups against Flandreau on Friday.
This year ALL games are at the Huron Arena.
(Click on the live link and you can take a vitual tour of the arena,
including a 360-degree photo-tour. VERY COOL!) The arena is
a classic place for basketball games with excellent sight-lines and
great seating. For teams not qualifying for their State
tournament, it is one of the best venues for basketball they will play
in. Under joint ownership and management by the Huron School District
and the City of Huron, the arena is an excellent tournament site.
The tournament has been changed to an eight-team bracket for both
boys and girls, with all teams being varsity-level teams. In the past,
some schools were unable to field a boys and girls team, and some
junior varsity teams were added. This created scheduling problems for
some schools, especially those from outside of South Dakota. The
change to an eight-team tournament will provide a higher level of
competition, guarantee all teams will play in the arena, and increase
exposure to all teams by having the games at one site.
The Dakota Oyate Challenge is a tournament "played off both sides of
the bracket". First-round winners will finish no lower than
fourth place. First round losers will place fifth at best. All
teams are guaranteed three basketball games, one each day.
Individual player awards include All-Tournament, MVP for boys and girls, Defensive and 3-point awards. NEWSPAPER COVERAGE BY THE HURON PLAINSMAN NEWSPAPER often includes photographs.

Omaha Nation: The Best Fans in Indian Country!
From an article published in 2002 by the Huron Plainsman regarding the Dakota Oyate Challenge:
Robert
Begay, director of the Dakota Oyate Challenge and a Si Tanka Huron
University alumnus who serves as a coordinator for the athletic events,
called the tournament a success. He said it was exciting and very
competitive. While there are other "all Indian" tournaments", Begay
called the tournament, which is open to many schools that may not make
it to the state tournament, "the best kept secret" in high school
basketball. The reason, he said, is because it offers the fans of the
teams a large tournament without a hefty price tag to take in the
games.
While
girl's games generally bring a lower turnout, the tournament brings in
a profit with the boys games and the bills are paid directly from the
ticket sales at the gate. "All our bills are paid and the Dakota Oyate Tournament always leaves with its bills paid," he said. The
teams' entry fees provide the seed money for the tournament. The money
covers the cost of awards and the fees paid to referees. [In 2001] the
tournament paid $7,000 for awards and $4,000 in referee fees. The
Huron Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the gymnasium rentals. Local
businesses sponsor game related activities during the event, such as
the hospitality rooms.
