How did you end up teaching at UNPS?
I applied for the job.  They hired me.  I have been teaching here since March of 1999.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you in the last year?  5 years?  In your life?
Nothing exciting ever happens to me.

What was your dream job when you were younger?
In first grade, we had to draw a picture of ouselves at our future job.  I drew myself as a teacher.

If you could not teach, what would be your dream job now?
I would love to be a population geneticisist and teach at a college.  I would also just like to go to college full time and just learn.  i have always been really good at learning things.

Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
I remember all of my teachers.  Some were really good.  Some were not so good.  There were also a few bad teachers.  I was fortunate to grow up in a town where there was a community of really strong, experienced teachers.  Many of my teachers (Mrs. Janda, Miss Alta Landon, Miss Florence Landon, Miss Timm, Mr. Hervert, Mr. Donovan, Mrs. Donovan) were in their last years of teaching before they retired or moved on.  I was lucky to learn so much from them. AND since my parents were both teachers these were the adults I interacted with all the time.  What a wonderful way to grow up!
Then my college experience was also fantastic.  Once again, I benefitted from numerous teachers who were on the cusp on retirement...Dr. Blickensdefer, Dr. Lund, Dr. Jussel, Dr. Krishna, Dr. Eckloff, Dr. Stones, etc.

What is your favorite quote, story, poem, etc.? Why?

"I find the harder I work the more luck I have."
"It is better to be thought a fool , than open your mouth and remove all doubt."

What is your favorite book? Why?

Kiterunner

What is your favorite childhood memory?
I have so many great memeories of growing up...it is hard to pick just one.  I just loved how busy we were all the time.  My mom let me try whatever actvity I wanted, and she let us have every kind of pet a person could possibly want.
There are somethings that really take me right back...
  • Clean sand...every summer dad would get us a pick up load of clean sand for our sandbox.
  • Hunting for mushrooms in the spring.
  • Playing any kind of sports.
  • Mixed vegetables...
  • Walking through freshly tilled soil.
  • Playing in the fine silt of Loup City's old softball field.
  • Going to the river.
  • The strong smell of old-fashioned marigolds
  • The smell of spring, a crisp fall day, the feeling of tornado weather

If you were an animal what kind of animal would you be? Why?
    A bear because...

Tell us about your family.
My mom and dad live back where I grew up in Loup City (200 miles from here).  They have lived in the same house for the last 30 years and now my mother decided to buy a bigger house.  It is hard to let go of the idea that the house we grew up won't always be there for us...but their new house is better and there will be more room for all of us.

I have one sister.  Her name is Rita Nickel.  She is 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days older than me.  Rita is a teacher here at UNPS.  She teaches 3rd grade. She has two kids.  Rachael was born on a Sunday, February 9. Randy was born on October 9. I am lucky to have family so close.

I have three younger brothers.  Benjamin has graduates from UNK and is a teacher at Lexington Public School.  Next is Nicholas  graduated from Hastings College in May of 2005.  Now he can be anything he wants to be or at least that is what he tells me all the time.  Currently he is a loan officer in Omaha.  Finally, we have the baby ofthe family, Ryan.  Ryan was born  when I was in fifth grade.   He is the luckiest person I have ever met.  He also has graduted from college and now trying to decide what to do.

I don't have any kids of my own.  The kids at school really benefit because I don't.  Instead spending my extra energy on my own children, I spend it on them.

Tell us something that nobody would ever guess about you.
I hated high school chemistry.  Everyday I went to that class I used to say to myself, "At least, I never have to do this again."
