Teaching Experience I have been a teacher for 35 years. I taught high school English for 8 of those years and the remainder have been in Special Education. After deciding I wanted to retire from teaching I saw an ad for a teacher for the Omaha Nation School. I decided I would like to see what that job might be like and applied. The rest as they say is history. (Hired Fall, 2001)
What was your dream job when you were little? When I was younger I was always adopting stray animals and nursing them back to health. I thought I would like to become a doctor; but, I didn't know any female doctors and I never thought I could actually become one. At that time females were either secretaries, hair dressers, nurses, or teachers.
If you could not teach, what would be your dream job now? My dream job now would be to go to a third world country where even simple medical treatment is impossible to get; and, I would provide help. I was once a certified EMT and I think I could get enough medical training to be of some use.
Who was your favorite teacher? I had several favorite teachers. Interestingly, they were all elementary teachers. They each were special in a unique way. Mr. Huggins was my 5th grade teacher and he was also the principal. He taught me you could be respected and still be kind. My 6th grade teacher Mrs. Browning read to us every day and she taught me to love books. Mrs.Witty was my first grade teacher and she taught me that a teacher can either make you want to be in school or not-she made me love school. As I look back, the one thing that stands out to me about teachers had nothing to do with what they taught me from books; but, how they taught me from their examples.
What is your favorite quote, story or poem? When I was in the 6th grade we made poetry books. We wrote our own poems but we also choose favorite poems of others to include. We also had to memorize three poems. I still remember all three-"A boy and His Dog," "Trees," and "The Coin." My favorite was "The Coin."
- Into my
heart's treasury I slipped a coin that time cannot take nor a thief
purloin. Oh, better than the minting of a gold-crowned king is the safe
kept memory of a lovely thing.
By Sara Teasdale
What is your favorite book? My favorite book would have to be the Bible. Not just because I am a Christian, but because it is a manual for life. My mother always had a Bible beside her favorite chair and I can still see her sitting quietly reading every night. As I have grown older and wiser, I realize that the reason my mother was the wonderful person she was, was because she lived her life according to what she read.
What is your favorite childhood memory? I am sure I am not the only person to believe that their childhood was the best-but I do. I have a million wonderful memories. I am the baby of 8 children. I grew up a certified tomboy and loved every minute of it. I could fish and hunt as well as any boy and my dad was my hero.
If you could be an animal what kind of animal would you be? If I could be any animal, I would be one of my cats. They sleep 23 hours a day and the other hour they are either sitting on the porch, eating, or being stroked by loving hands.
Family I have been married for 38 years to Don. We have 4 children-one daughter who passed as a baby and three sons. Greg is the oldest and lives in Mapleton, Iowa. Eric is next and he lives in Kansas City. Brian is our youngest and he lives in Minneapolis. Brian is the only one who is married(his wife's name is Amy) and I will be a grandmother for the first time in June. Allison Abbie is our daughter's name.
Here is a picture of my new grandbaby, Evelyn Kay.

What is something about you that no one would ever guess? Something nobody would ever guess about me- When I was in high school and part of college, I sang in a band.
