UMONHON NATION STUDENT COUNCIL
Host School: 2010 NASC State Convention

November 2010
StateLogo2010md:
Purpose:  Umonhon Nation Student Council is proud of the rich culture, tradition, and language within our school and our tribal community.  Umonhon Nation (Omaha Nation) Public School is located in Macy, Nebraska, the center of Tribal Government for the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Macy, an unicorporated town of about 1,550 is about 33 miles southeast of Sioux City, Iowa and about 70 miles northwest of Omaha, near the Missouri River. Our preK-12 school has a student population of approximately 435, 99% of whom are Native American. The majority are Omaha Tribal Members.

In pre-settlement times, the Omaha had a very intricately developed social structure that was closely tied to the people's concept of an inseparable union between sky and earth. This union was viewed as critical to perpetuation of all living forms and pervaded Omaha culture. The tribe is comprised of Sky and Earth people. Sky people were responsible for the tribe's spiritual needs and Earth people for the tribe's physical welfare. Each grand division is composed of five clans.

Umonhon Nation is in the final stages of a massive construction project creating a brand new gym, middle school, elementary school and new high school classrooms.  Our community takes great pride in the school and in the co-curricular opportunities afforded to the students at Umonhon Nation.  The Student Council is very excited to offer our culture, community and school as we serve as the 2010 host site for the 2010 NASC State Convention.  We have attended several State Conventions and will have hosted 3 District Conventions after this academic year.  These experiences will provide another opportunity for our Student Council to provide an effective and memorable State Convention

Description:  The NASC State Convention is a one-day convention held in the fall.   Over a thousand student council members and advisors from across the state gather for a day of information, inspiration, networking, and fun.  The State Convention is also the official annual business meeting of NASC. Delegates from member schools vote on state officers and conduct other association business.
